It's when you have to push the clutch once to disengage it, then shift into gear, then push the clutch a second time to re-engage it.
Basically, it goes like this:
1.) push clutch
2.) shift gear
3.) push clutch again

It does. It's not a rcing technique that I'm aware of. It's mostly used on older vehicles because back then the technology wasn't as advanced as it is today, and that's how they built them.

Superkid is correct. Double clutching is pushing in the clutch once to disengage the current gear that you are in, releasing the clutch when the vehicle is in neutral, pushing the clutch back in and shifting into the gear that you want and then re-releasing the clutch. The purpose was to get the gears to sync better. That has all been addresses with technology on todays transmissions. I believe that some of the big rigs of today still require you to do this. The above posts have been right on. With a modern synchro mesh tranny, double clutching really isn't important, and, as you mentioned, slows you down. So, depending on what type of car you have (and what tranny it has), double clutching may or may not be necessary. Josh

Double clutching is when you use two clutch discs instead of one, doubles your gripping power.

If so then wouldn't that require a penis?

Let me add this is used alot in heavy trucks and stuff. Their trannies are straight cut so double clutching is a must, which explains why no one ever wants to be behind a Peterbuilt when the light comes on.
