$10,000 dollar budget, what do you do?   Posted Fri Oct 29, 04   1:43 PM

Okay, let's see if we can get people talking about cars. Let's say you have a $10,000 budget and you need to buy a car and then mod it, what would you do? No requirements about how fast it has to be, import or domestic, stock engine or swapped, just what would you do? I'm interested.

I'd get a Del Sol, swap a Type R motor and trans into it, and then turbo the living christ out of it.

now that sounds like fun, light car lots of power, good for drags or tracks.

Hmmm. This is a good question. I might have to post a few different ideas as I think of them.

My first is I would get a Factory Five Racing Shelby cobra kit car. Take my engine trans differential and use this for the cobra. The kit would be ~ 1000lb lighter then my stang, that would give me a pretty good power to weight ratio.

not bad but ummm, the kit cost alot more then 10k and if you have ever gutted or taken apart your stang youd know theres ways to lighten it up a bunch. aluminum floor kits fuel cell. ect.

I wouldn't say the kit is a lot more, 12k, so let me rephrase it. I would use it for a down payment on the kit.

As far as weight savings on a stang, yeah there is a lot you can do, but to get it down to ~2000 lb isn't going to be easy. I have already done a lot for weight savings on mine. Fiberglass hood, removed air conditioning, power steering, smog pump, I have aluminum heads. Although I did end up adding some weight when I pulled out the 302 and put in a 351W. But the weight difference between a 351W and a 302 (5.0) isn't that much. In fact a 351W with aluminum heads is only~40lb heavier then a 302 with iron heads.

all of the ideas sound good, but it's a different situation than what I asked, the question was if you didn't have any car at all, but i think the kit car was the best option with what you guys said.

alright, from the ground up type thing. id find a old escort hatch or a fiesta(80's model) for 300-400 buy a 302. a short 9 in rear. and a auto tranny pay a buddy to custom the engine mounts and syspension deck out the motor cram it all into the car. and slap a pair of decent sized tires on it.

man, screw a civic. domestic is better dog me if you wanna but i prefer a real hp engine not bottel fed. and if it wasnt for nitrous ricers wouldnt have any power cause there engines are to weak to make the power by them selfs.
