I have been doing a lot of research on MR2 swaps as I am planning on buying one. I noticed that the MKII NA model uses the 5sfe, or a camry motor. Your best bet would be to swap in the MR2 turbo motor (3sgte) They can be had for about $1200 give or take. That will be the cheapest and most gratifying thing you can do. Just turn up the boost to 13psi and you have 20 more hp with NO mods.

Rx has a good recommendation, but to take it a little further...the 3SGE itself would give you around 20 hp more than the 5SFE stock, and the 3SGTE would give you 50-70 more hp. Or there is also the 2VZFE that was an option in the wagon version of the 1990 Camry, 2.5L v6 with 156 or so hp.

it would be interesting to see the build up, haven't seen to many of those modified, but you would be better off selling it for something else

The people at Toysport (Toysport.com) did a 3SGTE swap on a 1992, so they would be the ones to ask for advice.

In my opinion, it's all up to you. If I were you i would sell the car and get something else. But if you really like the car do the MR2 swap.
People used to tell me to just get rid of my '79 Celica but $1200 later it was pushing somewhere close to 300 ponies before I sold it.

It'll take a bit more than 1200 bucks to get close to 300 ponies out of the MR2 swap, but it will go well beyond that with time and effort (have seen reports of 450-500 hp), which would make for a fast Camry.
