I don't know if there was a swap made in that AE86 but if not it was running the 4ag Toyota Engine (same as the MR2 MKI), which is capable of over 350 hp and was used in Formula Atlantic.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, a half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

There were races in the 80s where V8 Camaros couldn't catch it (or at least a car with that engine), it's one tough little hunk of metal.

I agree, that car was much lighter, and chevy's engines were weak back then

It has nothing to do with engine power, and everything to do with driver skill and the drivers technique of handling each car. He could have smoked a corvette in that little hachi.

now thats how a AE86 should be driven! that skyline got owned pretty bad the driver of the hachi was pretty skilled on of the best ive seen so far.
