First off I find it funny that the picture that was posted of the fastest “import” was a Chevy, I guess you didn’t notice the bowtie on the backside window or the Cavalier on the front windshield.
Bur regardless if we look at the record holders for the NHRA Sport Compact Racing Series…
For the RWD class the fastest time was a 6.47 @ 220mph in a Toyota Scion
For the FWD class the fastest time was a 7.51 @ 195 mph in a Chevy Cobalt
Lets compare that to John Force running a 4.66 @ 333 mph in his Ford !!
Now regardless a 6 second import is amazingly fast, I’m not going to dispute that. But you have to remember there is an old saying that there is no replacement for displacement. So whatever mods are done to the 4 cylinder can also be done to a v8 with better results, which is why we see the domestic running 2 seconds quicker and over 100 mph faster in the ¼ mile.
This whole import vs domestic argument is rather dumb. You can make any car fast if you throw enough money at it. But dollar for hp you would be better off with a domestic.

Is that why last year out of 9 million vehicles sold worldwide there were 2.2 million recalls for Toyota and out of 10 million vehicles sold worldwide there were 4.4 million recalls for GM? Tell me who builds a better car?

Okay, so if you like American made stuff over stuff not made in America, which do you prefer: The Camry or Accord (both built IN AMERICA) or the Ford Fusion (built IN MEXICO)?

And not a single one of those cars you named is anywhere close in price to what you'd pay for an MR2. That's like saying that a BMW M6 is better than a Camaro. For 50 grand more it better fucking be. But with 7 grand I could make my MR2 (a 1989 model) into a machine that would kick ass on any of those vehicles other than the vipers (and it would probably out handle them because it won't have the same weight and risk of oversteer). Those I could take down with about 15 grand or so put into my car.

But this arguement has come down to straight line performance. And there is so much more to racing than that. Big displacement can be a serious handicap on tight road courses where weight is an issue (look at F1 cars with 2.4L v8s). Oh, and did anyone other than me notice that 220mph came from a SCION?

Yes I noticed the 220 mph Scion, very impressive, but I also noticed the 333MPH FORD!!! hehehe
As far as American cars not handling…
Isn’t the Corvette winning the GT1 class in the American La Mans Series? Yep they are beating every import, with a 2 valve pushrod v8.

Yeah, but no 69 charger would be doing that. And I bet they did quite a bit to make it a lighter car than it normally is (in addition to improving the suspension, downforce, and who knows what else to make it handle better).

7:44 - Zonda
7:46 - Porsche 996 GT2
7:47 - Porsche Gt3 RS (sport tyres)
7:50 - M3 CSL (sport tyres)
7:52 - GT3 (381hp)
7:52 - Lamborghini Gallardo
7:52 - Lamborghini Murcielao
7:52 - Mercedes SLR mclaren
7:56 - Porsche 996 Turbo
7:56 - 360 stradale (sport tyres)
7:57 - Lotec Porsche 993 Turbo (600 HP, racing suspension)
8:07 - Ferrari 550
8:09 - Lamborghini Diablo SV
8:09 - Ferrari 360 Modena
8:10 - Chrysler Viper GTS
8:12 - Porsche 993 Turbo (430 HP version)
8:15 - BMW Z8 400 HP
8:17 - Porsche 996 C2
8:18 - Ferrari F355
8:22 - BMW M Coupe 321 HP
8:25 - Audi RS4 375 HP
8:28 - Porsche 993 C2
8:28 - BMW M5 400 HP
8:32 - Porsche Boxster S
8:35 - BMW M3 Coupe 321 HP
8:37 - Mercedes C32 AMG
8:38 - Honda NSX
8:39 - Honda S2000
8:40 - Chevrolet Corvette
8:42 - Audi S4 265 HP
8:42 - Lotus Exige
8:49 - Jaguar XKR Coupe
8:52 - Mercedes CLK 430
This is a top times list, the Corvette are the new ones, but notice ahead of it are not 1 but 2 Hondas. That S2000 cost 20k less than the Corvette does, and has far less HP. But better handling led it to a faster lap time.
