I suggest you look for a cheap Mitsubishi Eclipse (1995-1997), a cheap Acura Integra (1994-1997), or maybe a cheap Nissan 240SX (1995-1997).
NOTE: I only put down years that would be priced relatively low. Hope you find what you're looking for.

true, really if i were in imports i would go for a toyota tureno ae86 but if your domestc go for a 2004 mustag GT, you'll have plenty of mula left over if you buy a used one!

Look for a 2nd Gen MR2 (1991-1995 in the US), should be able to find one in decent shape for 3-4 grand, then another 10 grand max into it to make it a high 12 to low 13 car. or find a 1st gen for about 1500 and do the same engine stuff for a 200 lb lighter version. I'll let other people chime in with different suggestions.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, a half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

MR2's are cheap to be 12 second cars. $1000 worth of stuff gets you into mid to low 13's

I was giving him the worst case scenario, wherein he wasn't able to get a 3SGTE equipped model and had to do an engine swap, and was including other opgrades like suspension, tires, brakes, wheels, etc.
